The fatigue crack propagation threshold as a design criterion

The application of the fatigue crack propagation threshold DKth seems to be straightforwardat first view. However its transfer to cyclically loaded components is faced with a variety of problems and potential uncertainties. These aspects and a better understanding of the threshold phenomenon will be in the focus of the work-shop which aims at providing a platform for knowledge exchange between scientists and field experts. In particular, the following aspects are suggested to be discussed:

-       Physically understanding the threshold

-       The similarity problem - effects of constraint, environment etc. on the crack closure effect and DKth

-       Experimental methods for DKth determination

-       Prediction models for DKth

-       Crack depth dependence of DKth (cyclic R curve, Kitagawa-Takahashi diagram, Murakami approach etc.)

-       Parameters which affect the threshold: Microstructure, parameters of the tensile test, residual stress effects, etc.

-       Stress ratio dependency of DKth

-       Threshold under variable amplitude loading

-       Threshold under very high cycle conditions

-       Transferability of DKth from specimens to components.

-       Practical problems of applying DKth in design


The workshop should highlight both the progress in the field of fatigue crack propagation threshold determination and application and deficiencies of current knowledge, specify practical needs, and promote an open discussion. Therefore, it is intended to limit the number of presentations in order to provide ample time for discussion. It is envisaged to publish at least some of the contributions in a special issue of a scientific journal.

The workshop is planned to be held on 4-5 November (two full days).


It will take place at ENSMA, Ecole Nationale Superieure, Futuroscope-Chasseneuil Cedex (Poitiers), France
